<p>A <span class="highlight">kernel</span>, in broad terms, is the “core” of a given Linux operating system. The <span class="highlight">kernel</span> contains the core features/capabilities of Linux itself in which virtually all other aspects of the operating system ultimately depend on.</p>

What is involved in the <span class="highlight">update</span>?<br />
————————-</p>
<p>Updating a server <span class="highlight">kernel</span> is generally a quick and painless process. First, the new <span class="highlight">kernel</span> must be fetched and installed. Once installed, the server will need to be rebooted to load the new <span class="highlight">kernel</span> version. Overall the only downtime experienced is the actual server reboot itself. Downloading and setting up the new <span class="highlight">kernel</span> to load on the next reboot will not induce any downtime or performance loss.</p>
